We have made a replica of a 1920s drumset for the big band called Original Vintage Orchestra, lead by a great jazzman, Mr Petr Kroutil. The set is played by another interesting musician, Mr Otto Hejnic. Before we began the process, we had been discussing lots of contemporary pictures and notes so that we would eventually make an instrument that would look like it is a hundred years old but sounds amazingly well. We ended up with a set consisting of a 30”x13” bass drum, a 12”x9” tom-tom and a 16”x16” floor tom. The bass drum is made of a 14 mm thick iroko wood sandwich, the toms are made of 8mm thick beech. All the shells are reinforced with 3 mm thick cedarwood rings and finished with an American walnut veneer. All hoops are made of mahogany khaya and everything bears PU satin finishing. Snare we chose to complement the set is an old brass Ludwig, we just equipped it with our beech wooden hoops. As drumheads, we mostly chose Remo Fiberskyn, an imitation of old good calf skin. The hardware we used is a combination of pieces that we made brand new and several old parts, mostly Czech Amati. The vintage look is supported by an iron rail mount with a five-piece set of handcarved woodblocks. Hand-drawn logos (the band's one on the bass drum and our Hallvad one on the tom-tom) are icing on the vintage cake. The look and sound of this set really takes you a hundred years back to the past.
